Les Dodd's Teams Dominate 'Mac and Jack'
By Graham Clark

In this weeks matches of the Formby & District Snooker League attention has moved away from the League to Cup action in the form of the ‘Mac & Jack Team Pairs’ First Round.

Les Dodd’s teams dominate the Quarter Final Draw after all three made it over the first hurdle. The B team had a bye whilst the A team saw off Con Club A in what was a tight finish until Dave Quinn settled matters with a fine 35 clearance. The C team scored their first win of the season by comfortably defeating Holy Trinity, Stephen Metcalfe starred for the Southport based side notching a 32 break in the deciding frame.

Legion C looked to be coasting to victory when they had kept their lead more or less intact with the deciding frame to play. However Alex Tyrer and Brian Kenyon nibbled away at the lead and could win by potting the last 3 balls. Despite not having potted much the Legion pair held their nerve to scramble over the winning line.

Crosby Comrades advanced to the Quarter Finals with an impressive performance against Legion B. Anthony Mackay and Andy Entwistle cancelled out Crosby’s handicap deficit and Breaks of 37 by R.Radford and 27 by R.Wilson forced home their advantage.

Our Lady’s A won through with a trouble free defeat of Legion D despite conceding the Legion cue men a 20 point handicap start. This tie swung strongly in favour of the Gild Hall outfit in the opening frame where Jimmy Tristram (28 break) and Ian Dickinson (22) beat Chris Wagstaff and Paul Aindow 90-33.

With the Brook club taking the other first round bye it was left to Ince to claim the last Quarter Final berth. They did so by winning a tense battle against Our Lady’s B 188-143. Leading by just 16 going into the decider Phil Fellowes and Dave O’Shea produced a steady performance to defeat Andy Hesketh and Jason Francis 65-36 and secure Ince’s safe passage through.

As the next Round is scheduled for the day after the next meeting I will conduct the draw with two committee members no longer involved in the competition at the Con Club. The draw will be available on the website and via the club notice boards.
