Title Race Down To Wire
By Graham Clark

After last weeks games of the Formby & District Snooker League Les Dodd’s B and Con Club B are again joint leaders, now 3 points clear of third placed Les Dodd’s A.

Les Dodd’s B stormed to a 6-0 home win over Legion D aided by breaks from John Eames (30 & 30) and a winning 22 clearance from Paddy Tyndall from 19 behind against Alan Swift who had himself notched up a 21 break. The Southport based side survived another scare as Jamie Rae won a re-spotted Black against Jimmy Mclintock 65-58.

Con Club B won 5-1 away to the Brook with Mark Bellas winning the frame of the match against Phil Harbon 54-46. Mark led thanks to a 22 break but gave Phil a chance on the last Red. Phil cleared to the final Black on which he gained good position but rattled it in the corner pocket leaving Mark to seal the vital win. The hopes of a six were then dashed as Chris Reynolds potted steadily to beat Graham Clark on the Colours.

Les Dodd’s A must hope for major slip-ups from the leaders after a 5-1 away win at Legion B. Dave Mills hit a 34 break and was ably backed up by Will Jerram (26) and Andy Rae (27,25 & 25). Andy is on course to break the 2000 points scored for the season, a remarkable achievement.

Crosby Comrades challenge is all but over after a 4-2 away win over Con Club A which has seen them slip 5 points off the lead. Robbie Radford impressed greatly with breaks of 41 & 46 in his defeat of Allan Parker while Robbie Wilson also chalked up a fine 43 break. Ritchie Barber also impressed, overcoming a 28 break from Adam Maylor to win 70-46.

Our Lady’s B are stuttering in their bid to land the handicap league after losing the Gild Hall derby 6-0. Gerry Murch (29 break) and Peter Kershaw (21) both won well for the A team while the B were left to contemplate what might have been after some very close frames.

Les Dodd’s C secured their second win of the season with a 4-2 home win over Legion C. Stephen Metcalfe stood out for the home side, hitting a 23 break en route to a 74-55 defeat of Trevor Lynch. Terry Barlow starred for the visitors with breaks of 23 & 24 in his brutal 101-21 victory over A.Stanley.

The final match of the week ended in a 3-3 draw between Holy Trinity and Ince at ‘The Tea-rooms’. The Pope’s, Andy, Mike and Mark were all on target for the visitors while James Holman, Peter Cook and skipper Paul Formby scored for Trinity.
