Comrades End Unbeaten Run
By Graham Clark

In the latest games of the Formby & District Snooker League, Crosby Comrades have inflicted the first defeat of the season on Les Dodd’s A with a fine 4-2 victory at the Princes Street venue.

Reg Watts held the key with his 60-53 defeat of Dave Mills and was well supported with comfortable wins from Anthony Mackay (37 Break), Robbie Wilson and Robbie Radford.

Con Club B remain 3 points clear at the top after a 5-1 home victory over Our Lady’s A. The Con’s landed their win fairly comfortably in workmanlike fashion with only Bill Clare standing in the way of another six-pointer.

Les Dodd’s B have recovered from their bad spell around Christmas and are back in second place following a fine 6-0 away win over Legion B. Skipper Mark Hopgood starred for the Southport based side, notching up a 47 break in gaining the notable scalp of Carl Finlayson. Paddy Tyndall sealed the whitewash coming from behind with a 22 clearance to beat Mark Rimmer 57-45.

Chris Wagstaff showed impressive form in Legion D’s 4-2 defeat at the Ince Club. Chris hit breaks of 24 & 47 in his 87-10 defeat of Dave O’Shea. Phil Fellowes and the Pope’s, Mark, Andy & Mike all won to seal the Ince victory with Mike Pope hitting a 22 break for good measure.

Holy Trinity won 4-2 at home to Legion C. Colin Robertson, James Holman and Luke Palethorpe all won well while there was a maiden League victory for Costa Pittounikos, a 52-32 defeat of Legion skipper George Howells.

Con Club A kept up their decent post Christmas form with a 5-1 win at the Brook Club. Breaks of 25 by Allan Corlett and 23 by Adam Maylor stood out for the Con’s helping them to impressive victories over Chris Reynolds and Ally Macallum respectively.

The final match of the week saw Our Lady’s B record a useful 5-1 home win against Les Dodd’s C. Phil Kershaw beat the highly regarded Stephen Metcalfe 52-4 aided by a 20 break. The Gild Hall men are moving into a decent position in the race for the ‘Joe Rigby Handicap League’, with Crosby Comrades looking the main danger.

Could all players take note that the individual competition results need to be with the secretary by next Monday, the 12th February. Remember the onus is on BOTH players to make contact with opponents, not just the Home player.
